Episode 2

Shelleen Greene

How Can We Use Cinema To Showcase The Ways In Which Issues Like Representation, Colonialism, And Post-WWII Immigration Have Impacted Cultural Representation?

Shelleen and Jasmine met in January 2025 to discuss how Shelleen approaches designing her β€œHistory of the European Motion Picture” course, a large undergraduate lecture class in the Department of Film, Television, & Digital Media. You can watch their interview below, or scroll down for the audio version and transcript.

β€œβ€ŠFor me, I think the most important thing is also to show them stories that are trying to sort of convey empathy, to complicate and enrich our understanding, and to force us to think quite deeply and critically about history and the use, the very careful use, of this medium.”

β€” Professor Shelleen Greene on her approach to teaching film history to undergraduate students

Bloomsbury Academic Press published Dr. Greene’s book, Equivocal Subjects, in 2014. She was awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Leeds (UK) from 2020-2021.
